From Failure to Full-Time Facialist
To understand why I'm so passionate about teaching estheticians, and why I use my podcast as a platform to encourage others, here's a little background information about me and how I got started with mentoring/coaching other solo estheticians.
After esthetic school in '99, I worked in several salons, day spas and a med-spa, but I was completely unprepared for how challenging it would be to go solo.
Renting a room, decorating it and doing facials was the easy part, but marketing and growing my own skin care practice was more overwhelming than I ever imagined.
I quickly realized that when it came to business and marketing, I just wasn’t sure of what to do next.
Skin care schools vary on how well they prepare you for graduating, but 1 thing I can honestly say is that they all seem to drop the ball when it comes to helping estheticians market themselves and build their skin care clientele.
There’s plenty of tips, hacks, tactics and strategies, but what I needed were the steps to go solo, get legal and build a clientele that earned me a full-time income.
Well, it took a lot of time and money, but I finally did it. I figured out a system for starting, marketing and growing a facial business.
It worked so well that I was able to build a new clientele in 4 more states over the years with faster and easier success.
As my career began to really peak, more and more estheticians started asking me to help them with their own skin care practices.
That's when I started designing spa menus and marketing materials for other spa businesses.
Then I started meeting up with spa owners and estheticians to walk them through building their own clientele.
I never thought that was a part of my calling until I realized how natural it came to me to learn something, do it with great results and then teach it to others.
And that's where I am today, teaching what I love, and what I'm great at so that estheticians like you don't waste time and money trying to do something that there is a short cut for.
I'll be honest with you, most estheticians don't make enough money to stay solo past 1 year. That's where the Full-Time Facialist comes in.
I've worked pre & post operative care in a med-spa, did facials and makeup for brides in a bridal spa, given countless body treatments and hot stone facials in day spas and done countless mini facials in salons before going solo.
And as a solo esthetician I've gone from working out of my home to renting a studio suite all the way to opening a 1300 sq skin care practice with front desk staff and 3 spa room renters.
It doesn't matter where you work, how you solo, or whether you have the best facials in town, if you don't market yourself to the people willing to pay full price, you will go out of business.
